Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef

This large-scale, constantly mutating series of handmade crochets replicate the forms of natural coral. The project, organised by the Los Angeles-based Institute for Figuring is a direct response to the plight of coral reef from pollution and global warming.

I have always had a love for crochet, although my creations have never been on this level. In the past I have tried to crochet with plastics but found it a difficult material to manipulate. I found it really interesting seeing how they incorporated certain materials into the work- in particular the beads.

The title of this exhibition is based on the mathematical geometry, one that was not widely accepted until recently. For many years mathematicians tried to prove the only possible geometries were the flat plane and the sphere. Skepticism was mainly due to the inability to model it physically. Until a hyperbolic structure was presented using crochet, making this 'craft' a way of thinking about the world, both mathematically and physically.
