5 and a half weeks

Only five and a half weeks till the final deadline of degree! Work seeming to be going ok, which is almost worrying as things never go as you plan them to! But enjoying this end phase, where all the hard work over the past (3) year(s) is coming together.

Ideal Homes Show

I went to the Ideal Homes Show for the first time. I'm not quite sure what I was expecting, but I think I was expecting a lot more freebies! It was an enjoyable day, but there was so much rubbish being sold. And some things that seemed good but just a bit too overpriced for my liking. I did like that there were plenty of massage chairs to rest in while I was walking around though!

Brit Insurance Design Awards

The world’s most interesting and forward looking designs have been nominated for the Brit Insurance Design Awards by industry experts spanning seven categories: architecture, fashion, furniture, graphics, interactive, product and transport. This 91 shortlisted designs are on display in the Brit Insurance Designs of the Year exhibition. From this comprehensive list, a panel has decided the category winners in each of the seven disciplines. These finalists will go forward to vie for the 2009 Brit Insurance Design of the Year to be judged by a panel, chaired by Alan Yentob and including the designer and environmentalist Karen Blincoe, and the architect Peter Cook.

Below are a selection of my favourites from the exhibition.

Hussein Chayalan

This exhibition is the first comprehensive presentation of Hussein Chalayan’s work in the UK. Spanning fifteen years of experimental projects, the exhibition explores Hussein Chalayan's creative approach, his inspirations and the many themes which influence his work such as cultural identity, displacement and migration.

Exhibits include ‘Afterwords’ which explores the notion of ‘wearable, portable architecture’ in which furniture literally transforms itself into garments; ‘Airborne’ - bringing the latest LED technology to fashion design with a spectacular dress consisting of Swarovski crystals and over 15,000 flickering LED lights; ‘Before Minus Now’ a dress made of materials used in aircraft construction which changes shape by remote control and ‘Readings’ a dress comprising of over 200 moving lasers presenting an extraordinary spectacle of light.

End of Web Design

So today was the final lesson on web design, my website is nearly finished, apart from my projects I am yet to finish. Now all I need is to upload it! Which will hopefully happen very soon so watch this space...

Anne Kyyro Quinn

Anne Kyyro Quinn, a London-based Finnish designer, sculpts industrial felt into a stylish array of home accessories, including throws, pillows, wall panels and lighting. While her signature style is raised-relief detailing, she is also known for unconventional material combinations, such as blending sailcloth, fine linen and wool.

progress report

For my personal project I am focusing on using felt and steel for my hangers, using these two materials and experiments with forms. At present I am thinking that this would be a hanger for either an office or restaurant environment.

My final major project is still the same but I have decided to aim the chair and dressing of it for kids. I had originally tried to stay away from designing a kids chair, but now this seems like the most practical and best suited to the project.
